Challenge

One in five women in Australia will be sexually assaulted or raped in her lifetime. One in three women will face sexual harassment in the workplace. If you’re a First Nations woman, a woman of colour, have a disability or identify as LGBTIQ+, those statistics are even worse.

Ahead of International Women’s Day 2022, Shape worked with a group of prominent Australian women to publicise their united call for real action and policies to protect women and children from violence and harassment, and to end discrimination.

Approach

Working with a short turnaround, we designed and executed a media blitz for the launch of Safety. Respect. Equity. We drafted media releases, supported the women for media interviews with talking points and interview coaching, and organised interviews with leading journalists ranging from hard-hitting political/current affairs specialists to morning TV hosts. We also provided advice to help the collaboration amplify the launch on social media.

Impact

We achieved widespread coverage across print and online news, television and radio. This included Nine papers, ABC, The Australian and News Corp tabloids, news.com.au, The Guardian, Mamamia, The Project, the Today Show, ABC News Breakfast and Studio 10.

The fight is not over, but this moment was significant in driving attention to the issues and the calls for action in areas including sexual harassment in the workplace, paid family and domestic violence leave, expanded paid parental leave and more accessible and affordable early childhood education.
