Challenge

The Centre for Social Impact (CSI) is a research and education collaboration between four leading Australian universities, seeking to ignite positive social change in partnership with not-for-profits, businesses and government. CSI came to Shape seeking ongoing media and communications support to help drive the impact of its work further, including research on complex social issues such as homelessness, inclusive hiring, impact investing and the social economy. This work has involved raising awareness about sectors and issues which struggle to attract mainstream media attention, such as the historic lack of investment in Australia’s for-purpose leaders which in turns weakens the not-for-profit sector that employs 1 in 10 Australians.

Approach

Working closely with CSI’s researchers and national communications director, we have successfully achieved strong media coverage for CSI research and programs. Our approach involves identifying the strongest news angles for media and elevating the new insights in the context of how they can shape better solutions for the social challenges facing Australians. We position CSI’s experts through pitching news comment and opinion pieces to leading outlets, using our extensive contacts in national, metropolitan and regional media.

Impact

This work has seen us land numerous stories in national, metro and specialist media publications, TV and radio about CSI research. We have worked with CSI’s partners to publicise report launches and special events, and have played a central role in building sector and public awareness for the Social Impact Leadership Australia program, created by CSI and funded by philanthropy to boost the capabilities of NFP leaders.
