Challenge

In 2022 the Paul Ramsay Foundation, Minderoo Foundation and the John and Myriam Wylie Foundation established an independent panel, chaired by Peter Shergold AC with Jillian Broadbent AC, Isobel Marshall and Peter Varghese AO, to undertake the first detailed analysis of Australia’s policy response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shape was asked to provide media and communications support for the release of the panel’s report to amplify the report’s impact and help ensure its messages would be heard by policymakers.

Approach

We worked closely with the review panel to achieve widespread media coverage of the report and its recommendations. We designed and executed a media strategy to maximise the report’s impact and carry its key messages to policymakers, organisations involved in the pandemic response and the general public, including through op-eds, media interviews and social media.

Our role also included coordinating the report launch in Sydney, hosted by journalist David Speers, and designing the final report.

Impact

The report has helped drive the public conversation about Australia’s preparedness for COVID and the next major health crisis, with its recommendations carrying weight among policymakers and organisations involved in the pandemic response. Among them, the recommendation for an Australian Centre for Disease Control which has now been launched.

Coverage of the report and its recommendations included front page stories in The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review, as well as interviews on ABC’s RN Breakfast and ABC Melbourne’s Mornings shows, television and radio news bulletins, and broad online coverage.
