The Paul Ramsay Foundation asked Shape to support them in developing a name and brand for Sydney’s first philanthropic precinct.

The Foundation wanted the naming project to contribute to the national Aboriginal language revitalisation effort. Shape drew in several partners for this project, including an Aboriginal-led advisory firm and Australia’s leading Gadigal language expert. We supported the Foundation’s engagement with local elders and Aboriginal groups.​

Ultimately, the precinct was named Yirranma Place. Yeer–rahn-ma is a Gadigal word term meaning “many create”; synonymous with the intended purpose of the building and the community it aims to create. It is a contemporary meeting place on the land that has been part of Gadigal country for tens of thousands of years.​

We also supported the Foundation with its community engagement around the project.​

The project has been extended beyond the building name with the naming system for the rooms also drawing from Aboriginal language and culture. Exhibitions, events and digital installations further contribute to building knowledge about the Aboriginal connection with the land on which Yirranma Place sits. The building is a permanent contribution to the Darlinghurst community.
